I grew up on the West Coast of Canada in the coastal rainforest by the ocean and her winter storms. This environment shaped my perception of the world, it informs the rhythms and personal myths that underlie my work.
As a child I drew with black ink and paper, in my teens, moving to water colour. Training as a draftsperson in the days when the work was done by hand, I gained the skill of discipline in my art.
Eventually I left drafting for a living, moving to fine art full time.
In college, introduced to acrylic and the sheer size possible with canvas, I fell in love with pure powerful colours.
I spent a year in Montreal studying art at Concordia University, travelled to Indonesia to study their amazing Batik art processes. I have had the good fortune to work with many of amazing artists.
I have explored many mediums, recently copperplate etching, and most recently, a return to paint on canvas (well, and water colour, and chalk pastel and sometimes all three combined).
Whether it is providing a journey through our coastal paradise, an exploration of an emotional experience, or beating on the doors of convention; I believe an artist’s role is to provide a different point of view, to take the ordinary and re-present it.
